You Can Tell Me

henry 6-2012
I heard your quiet little foot steps coming down the hall and figured you must be having a hard time falling asleep.  We had just returned from our family camping trip and energy levels were still high.  One look at your eyes though, and I knew it was more.  You stood in front of me, rubbing your foot across the tile, struggling to get the words out, so I put my hand under your chin, lifted your head up and said, “What is it?  You can tell me.” That’s when you burst into tears and said. “I miss Samuel”.  You couldn’t understand why you were feeling so sad after having had so much fun on vacation, but I did.  I explained that when we’re together as a family, experiencing a new adventure, is when I usually miss Samuel the most, too.  I held you in my arms and told you that it’s absolutely okay to have fun, but still miss Samuel at the exact same time.  I said that it’s because our heart knows he should be here with us.  Then we talked about how normal it is to wish he were with us, and how it’s good for us to talk to Jesus when we feel like that because He’s the only one that can turn our hurt into happiness again.  I walked you to your room and tucked you back into bed.  I rubbed your head and mentioned that while you drift off to sleep you could talk to Jesus and Samuel about our trip.  I whispered to you about telling them of the fish you caught and the fun you had.  You got a little smile on your face and began to peacefully drift off to sleep.

…weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5
