handmade nativity tutorial

I’m spending the day with Ruth from Gracelaced for her Advent in the Heart & Home series.
I’m sharing about a new tradition my little people and I started just this year.
I think you’re gonna want to come by and visit me
it involves tiny spools of bakers twine and little wooden people.

Brown Paper Packages

No doubt about it.
My wrapping was cute, but the ornament my six year old made all by himself
for his teacher, of their class hamster Blackie, totally steals the show.
Definitely the prettiest brown paper package tied up with string I’ve ever seen.

You Can Never Have Too Many Buntings

I love buntings.
Fabric.  Paper.  Oilcloth.
I love them all.
I think they are happy and cheerful,
two things I want my home to be.
And as far as I’m concerned,
you can never have too much happy in your house.

My absolute favorite thing about buntings though,
is that they can be created in about 10 minutes and
come with a nice big, happy pay off.
I like that the kids can join in, too.

Step 1-  Supplies.
easy bunting supplies

Steps 2 & 3-  Cut and fold.
Cut triangles to any size you’d like.
Fold over the top of each flag to create a channel for your yarn.
steps 1 and 2

Steps 4 & 5- Trim and staple.
Trim the corners off the folded edge.
Slide in your yarn and staple.
steps 3 and 4

Step 5- Tada!!
Stand back and admire your simply lovely paper buntings.

Five Little Birdies

Let’s create a mobile the whole family can enjoy!

You’ll  need:
-double sided paper.
i used an old book, but scrapbook paper would work, too.
-scissors
-twine, thread, or embroidery floss
-large needle
-stapler
(preferably one your grandmother-in-law borrowed from the VA hospital 40 years ago.)

Cut out 5 bird shapes,

and 10 wing shapes.

Hold 2 of the wings together.
Fold back a small portion at the front of the wings, away from each other.

Take those wings and slide them over one of your bird shapes.
Staple all three pieces together by placing a staple in front of the fold line.
Fold out the wings.

Use your threaded needle to poke a hole for hanging.
Be sure to leave enough room from the top of the bird to protect against tearing.

Repeat until you’ve created five birds.
Now hang them from your chandelier at various heights.

I think it’s a fun way to enjoy some craftiness
every time you eat a meal with your fam!

And just for you…

Burlap Bits

I think there’s always room for a little bit of burlap,
this time in my kitchen.

I bought a package of cork board squares from Wal-Mart for under $6.
When I got home I grabbed my spray adhesive,
about a half yard of light colored burlap that I already had,
and set to work.

I cut squares of burlap larger then the cork tiles,
sprayed each tile with spray adhesive,
and simply added the burlap on top.

Next I flipped each tile over and applied sticky Velcro squares
so I could attach them to the wall.

To do this just put both sides of the velcro squares together and attach one side to the tile.
You’ll have one sticky side facing out.
When you’re ready to hang simply press the tile against the wall and your done.

This technique really helps since thin cork cracks easily,
especially when you’re putting a nail through it.

I trimmed the excess off the edges,

hung ‘em up,

and added some pretty details.

Oh, and just for fun I painted one of the squares a pretty shade of blue.

I love that the light shade of burlap looks like vintage coffee sacks.
I think it’s a fun addition to my little kitchen coffee bar.

….Here’s the details about my details….
The cake print is from Blu Lima,
my butterfly pin was a gift from Jill at A Pocket Full of Posies,
the mini photos are from Wren and Chickadee,
and the botanical print is vintage from Goodwill.
